Walmart surprised its workers in the US by saying it will cut hundreds of jobs and ask many who work from home to move.
The company said it will reduce jobs at its main offices and ask most of its remote workers in the US and Canada to move to three main offices.
During the pandemic, Walmart let its employees work from home. Now, like many other companies, it wants most of them to work from its main offices in Bentonville, Arkansas, San Francisco Bay Area, and New Jersey.
Donna Morris, Walmart’s chief people officer, told employees about the changes in a memo. The company will also cut ‘several hundred’ jobs because of changes in how it works. Employees who leave will get two weeks’ pay for every year they worked at Walmart.
Walmart is the world’s biggest retailer and has over 2 million workers worldwide.
Returning to offices is becoming normal again. Many companies in the US, not just Walmart, are making it necessary for employees to be in the office for at least a few days each week.
