The 10-year period for Hyderabad to be the shared capital of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana is ending soon, marking the end of people’s connection with the city. Tomorrow, on June 2nd, 2024, Hyderabad will no longer be the joint capital, and all government offices will move to Andhra Pradesh.

According to the AP Bifurcation Act, Hyderabad was to be the shared capital for 10 years starting from 2014. However, then Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu ensured that most of the Andhra Pradesh government offices in Hyderabad were moved to Andhra Pradesh within a year of the Act being passed.

By 2016, nearly 90% of the AP government offices had relocated to Amaravati and other towns in the state. However, some offices, about 10%, continued to operate from Hyderabad, which many people in Andhra Pradesh might not have been aware of.

The last office to move from Telangana to Andhra Pradesh is the Andhra Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (APERC). Just a week before the June 2nd deadline this year, the office was shifted to Kurnool following a notice from the Telangana government to vacate all buildings.

Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy also ordered the relocation of the APERC office to Kurnool, which he designated as the Judiciary Capital of Andhra Pradesh.
