Washington :
An Indian man suspected of involvement in a plot to assassinate a Sikh separatist in the United States has been extradited from the Czech Republic. Nikhil Gupta, accused by U.S. federal prosecutors of conspiring with an Indian government official to kill Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a U.S. resident advocating for a separate Sikh state in northern India, was extradited after his arrest in Prague last June.
Gupta, 52, is currently held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, according to the Bureau of Prisons website and sources familiar with the matter. A Czech court rejected Gupta’s appeal against extradition last month, allowing the Czech justice minister to proceed with sending him to the U.S.
The U.S. Justice Department declined to comment, and Gupta’s lawyer did not respond immediately. The extradition comes amid allegations linking Indian officials to plots against Sikh separatists in the U.S. and Canada, straining relations with India, seen as a counter to China’s influence.
Gupta’s extradition marks a significant development in the case involving alleged Indian government involvement in plots against Sikh separatists, which has sparked international attention and diplomatic concerns.
