The creators of the film ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’ released a compelling scene featuring a journalist confronting Chamkila, portrayed by Diljit Dosanjh, over what she perceives as ‘sexist, vulgar songs that demean women

The long-awaited film “Amar Singh Chamkila,” starring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra, finally debuted on Netflix last Friday. Directed by Imtiaz Ali, the movie transports audiences to Punjab’s vibrant musical era, where the legendary Dalit singer, Amar Singh Chamkila, reigned supreme from 1979 to 1988. Through his music, Chamkila offered poignant social commentary, shedding light on the harsh realities of Punjab, including drug abuse, alcoholism, extramarital affairs, and dowry practices.
In the wake of its release, the filmmakers unveiled a gripping scene from the film featuring a journalist confronting Chamkila (portrayed by Diljit) about his songs, which she perceives as sexist and objectifying to women. The scene opens with Chamkila visibly uncomfortable with the journalist’s Western attire, avoiding direct eye contact. Sensing his discomfort, the journalist calls out his hypocrisy, pointing out how his lyrics degrade women.
Despite the criticism, Chamkila staunchly defends himself and his music, asserting, “I’ve only witnessed and experienced these realities growing up. Not everyone can afford to dwell on right and wrong; some just need to survive. I’m just an ordinary man. I have to create songs that resonate with people, or else my career will falter.” Asserting his position as Punjab’s top-selling singer, Chamkila adds, “Most people in this world are like me, ordinary, and they’ve experienced the same things I have. That’s why they connect with my songs.”
This impactful moment from the movie beautifully captures the nuanced and heartfelt portrayal delivered by Diljit Dosanjh. The multi-talented singer-actor has already received high acclaim for his performance. Shubhra Gupta of the Indian Express commended Diljit’s portrayal, remarking, “Diljit Dosanjh stands out uniquely, infusing Chamkila’s character with a radiant sincerity and genuineness. Chamkila’s songs and albums still hold the status of bestsellers not only in Punjab but also resonate with audiences who understand and appreciate the distinct connection between the singer, his music, and the era he emerged from.
