Officials in New Delhi, India, said that a fire at a children’s hospital on Saturday caused the deaths of at least six newborn babies.
The Delhi Fire Services chief, Atul Garg, mentioned that they were able to rescue twelve newborns from the hospital, but unfortunately, six of them didn’t survive the fire.
Garg also shared that one of the rescued babies is in critical condition, and the other five are currently getting medical care.
Garg mentioned that the rescued babies haven’t been identified yet because their birth records haven’t been found. It’s unclear if the fire destroyed these records.
The Delhi Fire Services got a call about the fire at 11:32 p.m. local time, and nine fire trucks rushed to the hospital.
Rescue efforts are still happening, according to Garg. He added that the fire started in a nearby building, but they’re not sure what caused it. Video footage from the fire service shows the hospital’s lower and upper floors engulfed in flames.
In 2021, there was another hospital fire in the western Indian state of Maharashtra, where 10 newborn babies died.
