Fifty people died and many are missing due to heavy rains and flooding in Afghanistan’s Ghor province on Friday, as reported by the Afghan Ministry of Refugees.
The Ministry stated on Saturday that around 2,000 homes were completely destroyed and up to 4,000 were partly damaged by the recent flooding.
They also mentioned that extensive damage occurred to agricultural land, bridges, culverts, dams, trees, and livestock.
“We deeply grieve the loss of our fellow Afghans who tragically died in the recent floods in Ghor province,” expressed government spokesperson Zabihullah Mojahid in a post on X.
The UN reports that hundreds of people have lost their lives due to sudden flooding in Afghanistan in the past few weeks. The northern provinces of Ghor, Badakhshan, Baghlan, and Herat have been severely affected.
The Taliban, in a statement shared last Saturday on X by spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid, acknowledged the significant impact of the flooding.
These flash floods are just one among several recent natural disasters in the region. In April, unexpected rainfall and floods claimed over 100 lives in Afghanistan and Pakistan, along with the loss of more than 600 animals.
In July, flash floods in Afghanistan caused further casualties. And earlier this year, a powerful 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck western Afghanistan, resulting in thousands of deaths.
