YS Sharmila, the new head of the Andhra Pradesh branch of the Congress party, has had quite a busy six months since she entered politics in AP. She’s become a key figure in AP politics lately, especially during the elections.
When she became the AP Congress president in January, Sharmila didn’t hold back in criticizing Jagan Mohan Reddy. She blamed him for supporting YS Avinash in the YS Vivekananda Reddy murder case and made this a big part of her campaign in Kadapa and the entire Rayalaseema region.
However, the YSR Congress didn’t take Sharmila’s accusations seriously. Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy even said she’s not worth paying attention to and accused her of having a personal vendetta.
The end result was worrying for the YSR Congress. They lost 7 out of 10 MLA seats in Kadapa, which has been a stronghold of the YS family for thirty years. It’s hard to argue that Sharmila didn’t have a big impact on splitting Kadapa’s voters away from the YSR Congress.
In just six months, Sharmila arrived in AP, became the AP Congress president, led the campaign against Jagan, and succeeded in defeating him. But as soon as Jagan’s term as CM ended, Sharmila vanished and hasn’t been seen since.
AP Congress leaders are waiting for Sharmila to come back so they can understand the political situation better, but she’s not involved in party activities right now. Maybe she’ll come back later when it suits her, but she’s certainly dealt a significant blow to Jagan.
